Do you.. Haiku?

Post by Roemello »

Simple poetry about anything you desire... whatever random thoughts enter your mind at the moment in the format of 3 lines... 5 syllables on the first, 7 on the second and 5 on the last.

I wouldn't have known without the translations, but now that I see.... The trick to the haiku is that they're supposed to be of the

5 syllable
7 syllable
5 syllable

format :) Unless there's other formats of Haiku I'm not aware of... then those work!

Trust me, I know what a haiku is; they are Japanese to begin with. ;)

The ones I posted are 5/7/5. You just have to understand how Japanese syllables work. Tenjou for example is a 4-syllable word in Japanese. TE-N-JO-U. The extended vowels—and that solo N—are syllables on their own. Haiku in Japanese are written using these sounds in 5/7/5 pattern—not Western style syllables.

There are actually other types of haiku (including types of poems that are longer, and involve haiku in them), however mine are of the standard 17-syllable (or perhaps better said 17-on) variety.

The wiki entry has lots of information on haiku, and other similar forms of oriental poetry.

The poems again with the Japanese syllables separated:

MO-U FU-YU DA
A-RA-TA NA A-NI-ME
GA KI-TE-RU YO

YA-RI-YA-SU-I
HA-I-KU O KA-KU NO
KO-RE DE I-I

YA-RU ZE-N-BU
TE-N-JO-U NE-KO GA
MI-TE-I-RU ZO

That's what I figured at first, but then the translations were off, so I wasn't sure  If it ain't english, I have no idea what the syllables are doing

This is a haiku
With seventeen syllables
I just made it up

:p

Well, not really. I technically made that up back in creative writing class senior year in high school, but it's not any less of a haiku for it. I happen to be really good at this, btw. :D

日本語で

This one I really did just make up right now... desu. 8o

For my thrilling job,
I sit at a screen all day
and type about spoons.

Although technically,
I don't type JUST about spoons;
there are glasses, too.

Seriously, though,
we sell restaurant supplies
to lots of places.

So next time you go
out to eat in Ohio,
you might use our stuff.

:p

I should think by now,
you would be well aware of
my mad skillz at this.

Each haiku only
takes me like fifteen seconds,
or maybe thirty.

Here is a good one
that I got from my sister.
This is how it goes:

"Haikus are easy,
but sometimes, they don't make sense.
Refrigerator."

Now, apparently,
you can get t-shirts with that.
Yay for internets.

So my first thought was,
"We're doing who with what now?"
Had to look this up.

Yeah, we can try it.
Guess it's like alternating
long and short verses.

So am I starting?
Or did you want to do that?
Whichever way works.

Okay, I'll begin.
One more person would help though,
So we switch verse lengths.

With just two people,
One is always seven/seven,
One five/seven/five.

So if anyone,
Would like to join our renga,
Feel free to join!

To join the renga,
Post the next verse of the poem.
Long then short then long.

(In a renga, the first verse is 5/7/5 syllables and the second is 7/7 syllables. Each verse you alternate between the two lengths. Technically there's fancy rules about nature words and conjunctives, but we'll ignore those.)

RENGA STARTETH HERE:

Once upon a time,
In the Roundtable kingdom,
There lived a great knight.
