KITTAH!!!

Post by Frong »

...And barf! And cat shite! I can has all of them! :x I now have one three-month-old, fairly passive little boy, who for the moment is still named Colby because I haven't come up with a better name yet, and one four-month-old, kooky hyperactive little girl named Birdie (officially named Spree by the shelter, but I just decided this morning to call her Birdie because she makes this funny chirping sound all the time ).

So OK, barf. About a minute from my apartment last night on the way back from the shelter, poor Colby either got so scared of being in a car or so carsick that he barfed all over the inside floor of the cat carrier, getting it on both himself and Birdie in the process. :x That stuff... smelled FOUL. Fortunately, none of it got on my car seat, so my car is unscathed after airing it out. My laundry room, on the other hand, got barf tracked all over the floor and the walls (and washer and dryer to some extent) before I could manage to clean the two of them off. That took me a while, longer because the smell made me gag. The carrier was a loss; I couldn't even bring myself to try and clean it, and ended up throwing it away along with the four rags I used to clean up the mess. Eh... it was only like 20 bucks, anyway. I'll just buy a new one. :\ That was Gross Cat Parenting 101, Barf Management Techniques.

BTW, even while I'm in there cleaning up the barf, Colby and Birdie keep playing the cutest game of full-contact peek-a-boo around the corner of my washer and dryer, which was FAR too cute for me to be annoyed for long. Colby is a wuss, though. He kept hiding behind me repeatedly.

So the rest of the night was spent driving them nuts with feather-string-stick toy and laser pointer, until they eventually got tired and mellowed out for the night. Went to bed like 2 AM without further incident. Got up this morning and changed their water, plenty of food still left in the food bowls. I go to empty the litterbox, which is this sifting kind with multiple pans so you don't have to scoop it (or so the label advertised). So what happens? Sure enough, right as I'm standing in the kitchen emptying out the gunk, Birdie decides to use the litterbox, probably to teach me Gross Cat Parenting Lesson #2. I KNEW this would happen. Problem is, neither of them seem to completely know what they're doing yet in that regard - they use the box, but don't always cover their shite properly. So what does she do? In the process of trying to incorrectly cover her mess, she LITERALLY flings shite on my wall. :twitch: She also then tracked it across my floor and rug a bit, naturally, so I spent a while this morning cleaning THAT mess up before I even got to eat breakfast. Here you have Gross Cat Parenting 102, Shite Management Techniques.

As compensation for flinging shite, Birdie has now been sitting/walking on/around me while I'm typing, purring REALLY loudly and walking on the keyboard and being generally cute. This has culminated in her sleeping in my lap, still purring (snoring?) like a motorboat. This is going to happen every time, isn't it. The second I get done cleaning up the grossness, they'll do something brain-fryingly cute and make me forget about it. :looney:

Tonikaku, profiles:

Colby (or whatever I'll call him)
Sex: Male
Age: About 3 months
Breed: Domestic Shorthair
Color: Striped Orange Tabby
Personality: Fairly laid back for a kitten. Eats a fair amount. Watches moving toys more than he chases them. Purrs really loud. Kind of a wuss at full-contact peek-a-boo, but also likes to ambush his sister from behind for no reason. Likes cramming himself into small spaces - forced me to duct tape off two holes that lead into the cabinet that holds my central heating/cooling. May mature into a lap cat; will sit still for longer periods on my lap while I pet him than his sister. Poor little guy may have a cold at the moment, which he'd have caught from the other cats at the shelter. He keeps sneezing on me.

Birdie/Spree
Sex: Female
Age: About 4 months
Breed: Domestic Shorthair
Color: Solid Orange Tabby w/ Striped Tail & Face
Personality: Typically hyperactive, runs around all the time for no apparent reason; also fairly skittish. Doesn't eat quite as much. Fancies herself a huntress, chases moving toys with a vengeance (including running into walls). Also purrs really loud and makes an odd birdlike chirping noise, sometimes at the same time as purring. Aggressive while playing, also a bit bigger than her brother at the moment due to the age advantage. Overall weird cat - likes to drag herself in circles on the rug while lying on her side, using only her front paws to move; chases her own tail; tries to climb up things she can't properly scale, like my kitchen stool. Very cute, but probably destructive. Will need to maximum catproof my apartment for this one. Still needs to learn proper litterbox etiquette.

Seeing as pictures are worth a thousand words (does that make video worth a million words? 8o), I'll upload some pics tomorrow when my parents come over with the digital camera. I really need to go out and get my own, but I don't want to spend a ton. Have to do some shopping around. BTW, Birdie and Colby aren't technically littermates, but they were raised together from when they were really little, so they're essentially siblings. The same people gave the shelter two litters of three kittens apiece that had been abandoned and had to be bottle-fed. He's from one and she's from the other.

Great, mom told me about the barf, but not about the shite. :ill: Hope you bought some really effective cleaners there.

Otherwise, they sound cute. I like the name Birdie for a cat, it's funny. Now I don't have to get a cat myself -- all I have to do is learn to drive, and I can just come visit yours whenever I feel like it. :D Pictures, I wants them. Now you can make your very own lolcats, once you buy a camera!

Hope the little guy gets better soon, for his sake and yours. Sick cat = more barf. :twitch:

I don't think he barfed because he was sick, at least. He made the most pitiful mewling sounds about halfway home, which made me feel terrible for having to make him ride in a car in a carrier like that. :( Didn't realize that was less a "I hate cars" whine than a "I'm gonna puke" whine. :x He hasn't barfed again since, so I guess he'll be OK. :\

Anyway, I used dishsoap and paper towels to clean up the shite. I'ma go today and get some of this cleaner/deodorizer called Simple Solution at Petsmart that mom mentioned in an email. It got 5 stars from all the user reviews and is all-natural, so it won't hurt teh kittahs any. Can maybe also get another cat carrier while I'm at it. :o

Oh yes, also forgot to mention before that Birdie is a scratcher and likes both jeans and carpet, and that they both love paper bags (duy). :p As for you visiting, you're gonna do so with what car again? :poke:

Yes, yes it is. Welcome to the wild world of kittens. Any time they do anything that you won't like, they will be inexplicably cute for the next n hours thereafter, where n is how long it takes you to forget whatever they did. :p

OK, update. I'm somewhat annoyed at the pet shelter due to their "to the best of our knowledge, these pets are in good health" line on my contract. Not only did both of them catch a cold, which is a lot more serious than with a human cold, especially with kittens, but Birdie has ear mites, Colby may or may not have fleas, and at least one of them produces shite that's not normal, meaning they might have an intestinal parasite that the basic worming didn't catch. Good health, my arse. :o Granted, there's nothing they could have done about the cold (other cats in the place had it), but their vet must suck if he couldn't even catch the ear mites. The guy I took them to took one look at her and was like, "Well, this one has ear mites. You can see the ear mite dirt right there."

Second reason for me being annoyed - it says right in my contract that unless I take them back to the shelter or to the shelter's preferred vet for things that pop up within ten days of adopting, they won't reimburse me for any of it. Stupid part is, I CALLED their preferred vet and they weren't even open yesterday. Laaaame. :meh: I ended up paying like 252 bucks to have them generally examined and get all the meds and stuff for them, so I called the pet shelter and explained this. They said they'll compromise and reimburse me for the cost of what they'd have paid to get the same meds from their vet, but they won't give me the 100 bucks for the emergency fee (had to use an emergency time slot just to get them looked at). That, to me, seems like a large pile of bullshite. I can't afford to wait two days and possibly have my newly adopted cats get seriously sick (and they agreed it would have been a bad idea to do so), but they won't pay for the emergency fee which resulted from my trying to be a responsible pet owner? I certainly won't be recommending this shelter to anyone in the future. :irked:

</justifiable rant>

So anyvay, my parents will be over tonight with the digital camera, so I'll get some pics then. In the meantime, here's some kitty typing by Birdie from like ten minutes ago. :p

Darn, I am sorry to hear that you had such a rough start!

Don't worry too much about the ear mites. Get some kitty wipes for ears at Petsmart...they are GREAT for keeping their ears clean. Clean them once a week and that will prevent the brownish stuff that builds up in the ear canal. As far as the colds - are they just sneezing or have any other symptoms besides that? Deworming would be a good idea too, especially if they have diarrhea. Once you get that out of the way, all should go back to normal.

Congratulations on acquiring two new additions to the family,
Frong! I'm sorry that you had to go through so much thou-
gh from the pet shelter. Aside from these issues, I h-
ope that Colby and Birdie are free from ailments.
At some point, you may want to consider a sc-
ratching post to keep Birdie from making r-
edecorating your place of rest in "underl-
ying reveal" (laughs)! Tis a shame tha-
t being a responsible pet owner doe-
s not by default entitle you the co-
mpensation of the vet fee. Mov-
ing on in subject, I can see B-
irdie bullying Colby if he d-
oes not grow a backbon-
e (laughs). But I'm cer-
tain that after pube-
rty, he'll come aro-
und... but she w-
ill still be a do-

According to Miss Cecil, it looks like Birdie was searching for "Revenge on Bad Shelter Vets" with Yahoo. She insists that Birdie switch to Google. He will have moar results. :looney:

Congrats on the Kittahs. Be prepared for lots of lulz. Also, running through the house at ridiculously high speeds only to glomp your foot, an invisible mouse, or the other Kittah (which will probably have the two kittahs also Tarzan-ing each other off couches, chairs, beds, from under tables, your lap, etc.) :looney:

They've already been dewormed multiple times, according to their papers, and their crap seems to have gone back to normal, so maybe they just had a stomach bug or something. I'll keep an eye on it. :\

Aside from sneezing and having irritated eyes, both of them still act normal so far. They eat, sleep, use the litterbox, run around hyperactively, attempt to bat at/munch on everything, and pester me for attention like typical kittens. :p As long as that's the case, I'll just keep giving them their eye and cold meds this week and see what the vet has to say when I take them back their next Saturday. I think it'll probably be fine.

In other news, my parents forgot to bring the digital camera last night when they came over to visit, so I'll get it tomorrow night when I go to the house before bowling league. I WILL get pics of them at some point. Blar. :duh: My dad was also saying how he saw ads lately with digital cameras that are pretty cheap. Maybe there's a good one that's cheap enough not to make me feel guilty for getting it right after having to pick up all the expenses directly related to the kittahs themselves.

Meh, I still prefer Yahoo. Fewer junk results. :p

This already happens, sometimes like every 30 seconds. This morning, Birdie ran up and tackled my foot from behind while I was walking, probably because the heel of my slipper was moving while I walked. :looney:

I thought she was going to yesterday, but she must have decided it wasn't gonna work yet, because she took her paws back down without digging her claws in. BTW, Colby's not THAT much of a wuss at wrestling. He just usually ends up on his back because he's smaller - he still puts up a good fight, which usually involves booting his sister in the face repeatedly. And a Boot to the Head.

Drat! Tis a shame that you do not live near me, Frong,
because I unearthed one of my old digital cameras
(it may be the first one I've ever invested in) a-
nd would gladly give it to you. But yes, digit-
al cameras are cheaper now, especially si-
nce the point-and-click ones entered t-
he market which are simple for jus-
t taking quick pictures and for t-
hose not trying to make a car-
eer of the activity. Is there
a Best-Buy near you at a-
ll? If not, check to fin-
d out if there's a st-
ore by the name
of J&R which
is great fo-

ras!!
