It's actually possible to get Steam to work on Linux. Most games that use OpenGL work with no problem at all. The ones that are DirectX-only are the iffy ones. Most games these days offer both options (although you often have to look hard to find the switch).
New laptop get!
Re: New laptop get!
What MMO is the MMO of the moment? I know a lot of them do work in Linux, mostly via Wine (the Windows emulator), but a few natively. Plus I can always test it on my USB xubuntu drive to be sure.

Re: New laptop get!
LaTale. They only list in on the Wiki page about the game as being Windows-compatible, so I doubt they have a Linux version. No idea if it's OpenGL or DirectX-based; haven't checked. Guess I can take a look when I get home. That said, unless my current computer goes kablooie on me for some reason tomorrow, this is all a moot point.
Re: New laptop get!
Ah, that runs that bloody GameGuard software doesn't it? That thing really screws up any attempts to get things to work outside a perfectly operating Windows environment—including some Vista boxes. It's actually capable of bluescreening XP virtual machines (VMWare) such that they have to be reinstalled. Due to Wine's nature it couldn't do that kind of damage, but I can't say for sure it'd work.
It's really annoying that they run such crap software to prevent hackers, and then (with MS at least) completely fail to actually prevent said hackers.
When I did play MS, GameGuard crashed the game a number of times on me. >_<
The game itself I'm almost sure would be fine. GameGuard however is a different topic entirely…

Re: New laptop get!
Nah, LaTale runs a hacker prevention program called XTrap instead of that worthless GameGuard crap. XTrap does crash the program once in a while, yeah, but not any more than GameGuard did, and at least it actually prevents hackers.
I know there are a few of them out there, but I haven't personally run across a single once since I started playing on Sept. 18th, when the public version of the game released. No idea if it causes issues with non-Windows OS's or not. It does say it's supposed to run properly in Vista, though, so at least that's something.
Re: New laptop get!
Huh, well I'll have to give it a spin to be sure either way. Unfortunately it's a rather large program, and my latest install of Xubuntu is just on a flash drive so I might have to screw with things a bit just to get wine to take a second look at it.

Re: New laptop get!
What, LaTale? Yeah, it's a hueg installation file. Dunno why, but Maple is like that, too.
In any case, I'm still not going to switch to Ubuntu anytime soon unless my current computer craps out on me and thereby forces me to face the choice between Ubuntu or Vista.
Re: New laptop get!
Yeah, my flash has 1.1GB free, and I seem to recall LaTale being roughly that size prior to installation lol. So it currently wouldn't fit without some adjustments.

Re: New laptop get!
1.1GB? It's not THAT hueg.
The one on my drive right now is 552MB. You should be able to manage that.
Re: New laptop get!
Beats me. I don't remember the installer for MS being any bigger than about half a gig, either. It could be a gig now for all I know, though. I haven't touched the game in over two years now.
