DOES ANYONE EVER USE THOSE QR CODES?

Post by soloist »

A QR code (abbreviation for Quick Response code) is a specific matrix barcode (or two-dimensional code) that is readable by dedicated QR barcode readers and camera telephones. The code consists of black modules arranged in a square pattern on a white background. The information encoded may be text, URL, or other data.

Common in Japan, where it was created by Toyota subsidiary Denso-Wave in 1994, the QR code is one of the most popular types of two-dimensional barcodes. The QR code was created to allow its contents to be decoded at high speed.

The technology has seen frequent use in Japan and South Korea, while the West has been slower in the adoption of QR codes.

I actually have a Bar Code generator called Zint to crank those out.

The main reason these 2D bar codes have received slow adoption in the US is because of the various coding methods out there... Aztec, QR, ect.

Nope. There's apps for it on my ipad and Blackberry, but I really couldn't think of any use I'd have for reading those... even with the apps being free I wouldn't bother

If you had something like Zint ( http://sourceforge.net/projects/zint/ ), you might use one of those QR readers apps to show off stuff.

I mostly only ever find them on advertisements, and I have no intention of intentionally loading spam on my phone. :p

They can be handy I suppose, if more people used them. You can make standard calendar events that most mobile devices can handle and encode them in QR codes, so if you're arranging an event over facebook or something, using a QR code could be handy -- but then, Facebook and the like already have phone integration. Eh.
