Last night I decided to scan my computer for Spyware using a Free Lavasoft application called Ad-Aware 5.62(Only 834K) and the scan found 42 spyware (confirmed & suspicious) components in my computer. I went ahead and deleted all. The thing is...even if you remove the program, the spyware remains. You will most likely still have it in your computer unless you clean it with spyware removal applications like this one. <

You should try CNET's catchup, it does an application scan for updated patches, security scan for any programs that have security vulnerabilities and provides the the most recent patches for that, and a spyware scan. Its a real small download.

Ad Aware by LavaSoft is an actual product that was formed by Steve Gibson of GRC.com from his "Opt Out" program.<

alternatives to most p2p programs

Post by djakrse »

one has to be mindful of spyware when using any program that claims to be free! especially now with all the p2p programs which are competing for the same purpose, and all of which are claiming to be free. this spyware thing is what they hope will allow them to make money in the long run... by collecting information about your
owsing and searching habits.<
><
>adware programs tend to have the most, they usually have spyware working alongside the adware program to produce a selection of ads geared towards your interests. that in itself may not sound harmful, but it is very offensive when it cannot be removed once you are aware of it and decide you dont want it.<
><
>new.net (newdotnet) is one of the worst, it has messed up quite a few computers (including mine) in the removal process, as it is not removed from your system by the originating bundling program OR the spyware uninstaller itself! it must, therefore, be removed manually which is tricky.<
><
>i highly recommend using ad-aware, as it will locate all spyware and remove most, if not all. it is the equivalent of a good anti-virus or anti-trojan program, and even has a utility to run at all times and prevent the installation of more spyware. it rocks!<
><

I used Ad-Aware. Its a good utility. After I ran CNET's spy ware scan, it detected 4 on my computer. I ran Ad-Aware, and it got rid of all those spy ware components.
