Gifts or Gift Certificates? What's your preference?

Unless you're gonna get me either A) something cool and handcrafted that I can't just go out and buy easily myself (e.g. local products from someplace far away), or B) something specific you knew I already wanted (e.g. a particular video game), just get me a gift certificate. I generally prefer to pick out my own clothes and other stuff, anyway. $:\$
