Anyone else fighting a cold right now?
I've been with a cold since Thursday and it's been really annoying. Didn't get much sleep last night...only 3 hours, thanks to a stupid itchy throat that made me cough and kept me awake.

I am sorry to learn that you are the victim of a cold,
Ingrid. None here... just weariness after work-
ing long hours yesterday. Are you current-
ly taking anything that may rid you o-
f this bug at all? I am hoping tha-
t it's not the flu that you hav-
e contracted considering
how long it has man-
aged to stay wit-
h you. Pleas-
e get ple-
nty of
re-

ts of water. S-
omething that ma-
y help more is lemon-w-
ater. Just add a few drops a-
t least to a cup or if you have bo-
ttled water, that works just as well e-
ven. If you wish to learn the ingredients
to the ginger tea that I make, just PM me, o-
k? Here's hoping that your recovery is a swift one.

Ahhh...poor thing!
Feel better soon!
I've been fighting off a cold for awhile it seems. Just feel so run down. This cold weather seems to settle into my knees and makes all the stairs I gotta climb hard to do!

Re: Anyone else fighting a cold right now?
Awww thanks, guys!
Well, last night was awful. Couldn't get to sleep at all because of the congestion, cough, etc. Had lots of green tea with lemon juice and honey, soup and lots and lots of water. Finally got some sleep in the AM...and was able to sleep for a few hours. Woke up feeling a lot better. I think that was the worst part of the cold and from that point on, i started to feel better. My voice still sounds kinda weird like I have a cold and there is a little leftover of the cold, but it looks like it'll all be gone in another day or two.

I had a small one a few weeks ago, but was quickly and easily thwarted
Plenty of fluids, a good bit of rest and bug shall die! Kill it!!
Re: Anyone else fighting a cold right now?
I should send you my own recipe for cold and flu fighting. Came right over on the boat almost a 100 years ago.

Re: Anyone else fighting a cold right now?
A recommendation by the docs: pouring lemon juice and/or honey into hot liquids like tea will reduce the healing effects of these additions. Better have the honey on a roll - or pure.Diabolique wrote:Had lots of green tea with lemon juice and honey...
Winter time is cold time for me - and there's virtually nothing I can do against it. It varies between a running nose and the sensation of death approaching me, currently I'm on COLDCON 3 (clogged nose, slight chance of coughing, mild tension in head, generally tired, cigarettes still tasty enough).

Share Masa, share that recipe.
Wave - Interesting...but i must admit they taste great together! Got some grapefruit juice the other day, so I have that pure and not mixed with anything else. Cold is almost gone though...just a little leftover.

Re: Anyone else fighting a cold right now?
It's a Lithuanian drink. Don't ask me how to spell the name of this. I can pronounce it though:
LUH-vid-dee-kus.
((Of course, us third and fourth Generation American Lits might be wrong on the history of this, but who cares? It's a damn good drink. XD ))
-------------
Take a big pot. Pour in a fifth of the cheapest Rye Whiskey you can find (taste testers agree that Pikesville is the best.) Pour in one pound of honey. Cut in half two oranges and two lemons. Then, cut into fours. Squeeze the juice into the pot and then drop the rines themselves into the mixture.
Now for your spice bag. Layout some cheesecloth. Not too thick, but enough to hold the spices. Break up three cinnamon sticks and pile in the center of the cloth. Then, sprinkle in a tablespoon of Caraway Seed over the Cinnamon. Then, crush two whole nutmegs and add to them. Lastly, add about four or five whole Cloves to the spice pile. Tie up the spice bag with some string. Cut off any excess Cheesecloth from the top. Drop the spice bag into the pot.
Turn on a low heat and let simmer while stirring slowly and frequently (on my electric stove, I usually turn it to Number 2 or lower.) Press the spice bag to the bottom of the pot for a few seconds often with the spoon, just to help the spices get along into the mix a little better. Don't not let this boil or be kept on a Med or High heat! You can boil the alcohol out and/or cause an explosion. When the mixture begins to bubble just a tiny bit, it's done. Remove the rines and spice bag when it is cool enough (squeeze them out over the pot. Waste not Grasshopper. ;-) ) Throw the rines Using some chessecloth over a funnel, slowly pour the mix into some bottles (can usually fill about two bottles.) You do not need to refrigerate at all. However, keep the cap off the bottle or just sitting on top overnight. You can tighten the cap when the mix becomes room temperature.
You need to drink it warm each time. You can heat it up on the stove in a small pot. I never liked using the microwave. I feel I have better temperature control with the stove. Also, you drink it as a shot, but don't gulp it down! Savor the taste. Then, swallow.
You can drink it out of an eight oz glass too.
Enjoy.

Re: Anyone else fighting a cold right now?
Hey, I didn't know you had Lithuanian ancestry. My great-grandpa Izzy and great-grandma Gertie were Lithuanian immigrants, so maybe they knew how to make this stuff. I'll have to ask my dad or my grandpa if they've ever heard of it.

Major problem (as mentioned above): with heating, the healing ingredients of the honey and the fruits will be destroyed, and the alcohol will be cooked off, too (which isn't necessarily a bad thing - just for the records, ethanol boils at 173.1 F).Masamune wrote:It's a Lithuanian drink. But if this drink is making you feeling better, it's okay.

I'm glad the cold is just about gone.
While I don't have one at the moment, I know how those feel. I never thought a cold could feel that bad, but it does. Ugh.

Re: Anyone else fighting a cold right now?
I didn't get a cold and I hope to not get one this season. I may have had a stomach flu last week. I had really upset stomach and right now I'm sleeping way more than I usually do.

She did say not to outright boil it, you know, specifically because the alkeehol would burn off.wavemeister wrote:Major problem (as mentioned above): with heating, the healing ingredients of the honey and the fruits will be destroyed, and the alcohol will be cooked off, too (which isn't necessarily a bad thing - just for the records, ethanol boils at 173.1 F).

Yep Frong. My Dad is Lithuanian. Both of his parents were born here though.
And enough kitchens have gone boom as well. She did say not to outright boil it, you know, specifically because the alkeehol would burn off.
