Why don't doctors ever listen????
Why don't doctors ever listen????
I'd really like to know why doctors don't ever listen to their patients. For the past 10 years I've been saying that back problems are all related to a disc problem I had 10 years ago and the dr.s all dismissed it. Today I had a nerve conduction study done by my neurologist. Wouldn't you know it, I have some nerve problems exactly where that disc problem was 10 years ago!!!!!!!
Now they want to do an mri but it's a matter of seeing if my insurance will pay for it. Right now I'm stuck on Oregon's version of medicaid and it's hard to get them to approve expensive tests like an mri. So we'll see what happens now. I'm just so aggrevated that no one's been willing to listen to me this whole time. Want to go back to my regular dr. and tell her I told you so!!

If doctors listened, my Dad would still be alive.
Re: Why don't doctors ever listen????
No kidding. I guess I've just been lucky enough not to have to deal with the quacks thus far in my lifetime. Otherwise, I might have had my Tourette's misdiagnosed as who knows what and been used as a guinea pig for God knows how many of the wrong meds.Masamune wrote:If doctors listened, my Dad would still be alive.

Unfortunately, the medical field is similar to that of the
illegal drug trade. Provide a prescription to get pati-

Oy, exaggerate much? In the case of Tourette Syndrome, researchers are still trying to pinpoint the gene that causes it and find a cure. The psychiatrist that diagnosed me all the way back in 7th grade did his job properly, and the meds he prescribed have been the only reason I can cope with the disorder without being under constant and extreme stress. If I'd gone to a quack, he might have screwed me over, but that wasn't the case, so things turned out basically fine. There are good and bad doctors, just like there are good and bad everything else.soloist wrote:Unfortunately, the medical field is similar to that of the

Re: Why don't doctors ever listen????
Just too bad there seems to be more bad doctors than good. More often than not I hear of people ending up worse off going to doctors than better. Or getting meds that don't do anything or the wrong ones entirely. The medical profession is a business... and maybe focusing a little too much on the monetary side than actually trying to help people to better health. Soloist is right to an extent... the vast majority of meds ya get from a doctor are simply temporary relief. Nothing to actually cure the problem, just give ya enough relief to keep going... until the next pill
Of course there are good doctors who really do want to help people. Just gotta be lucky enough to find one. Such is why it's always good practice to get a second and third opinion on any ailment at the very least.

Re: Why don't doctors ever listen????
You know, now that I think about that statement, isn't it only logical? Of course many of the meds that doctors give you are temporary relief, outside of antibiotics for getting rid of something like a simple infection - there isn't an outright cure for most of the illnesses or conditions out there.Roemello wrote:Soloist is right to an extent... the vast majority of meds ya get from a doctor are simply temporary relief. Take acid reflux, for example, which I have. Before I started taking anything for it, not only did I get heartburn frequently, but I couldn't even hold down my food sometimes. Once I went and saw a gastroenterologist (who also happens to be really good, btw) and he prescribed me Nexium, the issue largely subsided. I still can't handle very spicy or acidic foods, but I almost never get heartburn anymore and can eat like a normal person. The only caveat is that I have to be careful not to miss taking the Nexium every night, because it wears off quickly. If I miss a dose, then sometime the next day, my acid reflux will start acting up again. Now, can that really be viewed as "giving me enough relief to keep me going until the next pill"? Technically yes, but seeing as there's no cure for acid reflux, this was the best the doctor could do for me. Quite frankly, I'll take the relief, thanks. Better that than being miserable every day.
It seems to me like the only time you can fault a doctor for prescribing meds to give you temporarily relief is when the meds he prescribes are unnecessarily strong and addicitive. That's akin to getting somebody hooked on illegal drugs, yes. Most meds aren't addiction-forming, though, so if you've found that one of them doesn't work, you can simply stop taking it and tell the guy to find you a different one. It's not automatically the doctor's fault if a particular drug doesn't work well for you, after all. Everybody is a little different when it comes to these things.
Re: Why don't doctors ever listen????
I'm feeling the effects of bad doctors now. I was given xanax 2 1/2 years ago and have been on it since. I've tried and tried to get taken off it but both my doctors refused saying I really needed it. At the time it was prescribed, yeah I needed it to keep me from killing the ex,but now that it's all in the past,I no longer need it,still, they refused.
I finally found a Doctor who is willing to help me through this and she has been very good at helping me. I've went from 4mgs a day to my current 1.5mgs a day, which I loose .25mgs a day every week until I am off the drug.
I'm sure everyone knows what xanax is,highly addictive and very tough to get off of. Can't stop cold turkey or it could have fatal side effects. As much as I want to just stop right now,I know I can't but I am doing much better and the doctor is very supportive of what I am doing. She is on call 24/7 for me as well just in case I do need to talk to her about anything since this med can cause a lot of mental stress and anxiety while detoxing from it. In 6 weeks I am hoping to be free from this monster that has taken over.
As far as pain meds go,the doctors around here are very reluctant to prescribe them, even though I have Fibromyalgia,I have had trouble getting the proper meds. Right now I have decided to live with the pain rather then take anything. I've been on Oxy and Vicodin and the times I was on them I took myself off and decided I didn't want the meds anymore,I was never forced off,but I feel better not taking them mentally, physically I hurt all over but I am getting more used to the pain and what triggers the pain.

Re: Why don't doctors ever listen????
Right, well, there you go. Xanax is an extremely strong, highly addictive drug with serious side effects that's a far cry from something like Nexium. Meds like that should never be prescribed without serious thought beforehand, simply because it's possible for them to cause as many problems as they cure for some people. It sounds like in your case, it did its job, but it's certainly reasonable to wonder if it was the right decision in the first place. Was there really no other way?
Re: Why don't doctors ever listen????
I wasn't given any other options and not told of the side effects of xanax or how hard it is to stop using it. I've told the doctor that no one should be allowed to write this med for anyone. The place that is helping me detox refuses to write a new script for it for anyone unless they are detoxing from it,which is a good way to go at it. I found out there are several other meds that could of been prescribed to me other then xanax that would of worked just as good and not addictive.Frong wrote:Right, well, there you go. Re: Why don't doctors ever listen????
It sounds to me like you should have gotten a second opinion before ever taking the stuff. Or did you get a second opinion and they said the same thing as the first guy? That'd be pretty sad if that's the case.
Re: Why don't doctors ever listen????
In my mindset at the time 2 1/2 years ago,I really wasn't looking for second opinions,I was looking for a quick way to control the anxiety I was having.Like I mentioned in my other post,I was ready to kill my ex and really if I didn't take something fast acting,I was going to end up in that situation after all she was putting me through.I am not saying it did not help, but I should of been warned of the effects of getting off Xanax before I even took it.Frong wrote:It sounds to me like you should have gotten a second opinion before ever taking the stuff. It is no day in the park trying to detox from it,in fact I am scared I won't be able to alone and have to actually be hospitalized to get fully off it. For now I am going to try it as an outpatient and see how it goes in the next 2-3 weeks and if I am not getting any better I am going to suggest they find me a place to help. It will put me in a bad position finacially but I am trying to prepare now and save money up in case in comes to that,so that way everything is paid and I can go away for a few weeks and get better.

Well, at least it sounds like the detox is going OK so far. Here's hoping you can finish it without incident and spare yourself more spending and grief.
