PROF. CANCELS CLASS DUE TO PORTAL 2...

We have to give Geoff Pado's professor credit for connecting the dots when most of his students called in sick for class the day before Portal 2 released.

After all, most grown-ups would probably assume that some kind of virus is sweeping through the dorms. My guess is the prof wanted to take the day off to play Portal 2 him or herself.

Pado tweeted the following email from the professor:

If I were that teacher, I would've held class as normal. You have to make the point that getting an education is more important than video games, and I say this as a lifelong video game geek. Seriously, people - priorities. :1ohboy:

And for a Portal game no less? But really.. how much of the day do they really need to play a game? They'd have the whole day/night after class to game out to death after class. Slackers :p

Smart professor.

I took a week off work for Duke Nukem Forever (in all fairness, I do have PTO time that needs to be used up before I lose it.) I also confess to calling in sick to play games. :P

Oh, come on, people. Just do what I do - put off doing your work as much as you can while still just barely getting it done on time, and spend the rest of your time playing games. That way, you get to binge on gaming and still basically look responsible. :p

I agree with Frong about holding class as normal. Of all the things to cave into, like student walk outs for some worthy cause or a real illness or some disaster situation, a video game release isn't one of them.

I never actively skipped a class to pick up & play a game when I was in college...

I would, however, make a mad rush to the local Gamestop (utilizing the bus lines, timing things out to the minute) to pick the game up (as I would pre-order it) between classes... typically around noon, when there's a 20-minute gap between classes (as the starting time shifts from on the hour to 10-past).

But if students were going go skip
class anyway, this course of ac-
tion would make sense... no-
t that I'm all in agreement
with it. I too used to sc-
hedule time so that I
could pick up gam-
es, but between
shifts not clas-
ses. I never
skipped c-
lass or t-
ook a
day
off fro-
m work to
get a game, t-
hough I have use-
d a vacation or sick d-
ay to play a game... but
that was when Oblivion firs-
t was released. Since then, I j-
ust schedule my time accordingly.
