Attention Chat Users :: You must UPDATE your JAVA::

Post by Diabolique »

If you've attempted to load our chat and found a big blank square, that's because you must upgrade your Java.

The chat client we use was upgraded by its provider and now looks slightly different, but the main thing is that it'll require the latest Java.

I would recommend that you use IE rather than Firefox. Chat seeems more IE friendly for some reason.

Anyway...just letting you know, so you won't freak out. :p Just upgrade Java and you should be all ready to go! :thumb:

They better get Firefox friendsly or a lot of people won't use it, because there are a lot of people who don't like using IE.

In the event it doesn't go over well, we're prepared to jump back to the old chat system that's basic, but at least works for all.... just seeing how this goes first and go from there :)

This should be flagged as an announcement as it's pretty important.

Anyways, what version of JRE should we be using in the chatroom? 1.5.0_06 , 1.5.0_09 or is there a newer version I'm not aware of?

Thanks Ingrid!

Just another reason not to use Firefox, it sucks! I have the latest up date of Java and IE! :banger:

You can choose not to use FireFox, but how you can put your computer through IE is beyond me.

Anyway, my Java updated automatically, so I never even noticed a problem. :p Plus, chat tends to work fine for me. (I discovered the problems I had before was actually due to a bad install of Java, it seems.)

Firefox does suck
I use to rave about Firefox, before I realized that IE7 is so much better :thumb:

I just went in the chat, and I guess I already have the latest Java, only I don't remember ever getting it. Must've came with IE7 or something. I've no idea. LOL

Internet Explorer uses it's own (MS) Java Virtual Machine (JVM) primarily over (SUN) Java Runtime Environment (JRE), which gives the impression that it's up-to-date when you upgrade IE. However, IE can be configured to run JRE over JVM in the settings... but most people go with the "if it's not broke, don't fix it" (unlike the other expression that ends "...you're not trying hard enough!"

Just to clarify version names JRE version 5.0, update 9 IS JRE 1.5.0_09 when you look at it.

My Java is updated, but when I try to access the chat in Firefox I get an X in the upper left hand corner, but I have no issues with IE. What's up with that?

Call me back on IE when:

1) It loads more than 50% of the pages on my computer. (Honestly, I don't know why, but the IE on my computer sucks more than most. Maybe it knows I hate it.)
2) Has a customizable ad-blocker, Canadian, German, and Japanese dictionaries and Kanji dictionaries, Gmail notifier, auto linkification and text-to-image, is fully tweakable (about:config), and lets you play Pong online. Oh yeah. :p Oh, and I can set it to play music from the browser too, I just haven't listened to music much recently.
3) Has mouse gestures. I will no longer use a browser without mouse gestures again. The laziness they offer is supreme.
4) Loads pages faster than my tweaked FireFox.
5) Doesn't take explorer.exe with it when it crashes.
6) Actually meets web standards for HTML. (Yeah, it still doesn't as I understand it. One common example is title text.)

My policy is to just set ZoneAlarm to block Internet Explorer from the Internet altogether, and forget about it.

FireFox > Opera (I liked this browser up until I discovered there were mouse gestures for FF.) > Nutscrape Agitator > Internet Exploder > AOHell

(Would you believe I had someone in chat today using AOL version 1.1!? Wasn't that made for, like, DOS?!)
